The AP introduces the world to mashups in this piece today (thanks John).
It includes this comment:
"It [the growth of Google mashups] really helps us position our mapping tool as an innovative product being leveraged in lots of interesting ways and it really helps our brand," said Bret Taylor, product manager of Google Local.
I hadn’t considered the brand value of Google Maps, but it makes a lot of sense. Get consumers and developers hooked on maps, then figure out a way to route them back to the local product (if they don’t come on their own).
This comment also indicates to me that Google isn’t about to start pasting AdSense banners into their maps. They’re going to have to figure out a new advertising format that makes sense in the medium.
